columbia earthscape is an integrated, interdisciplinary resource that connects the Earth and environmental sciences with their social, political, and economic dimensions. Although it primarily serves undergraduates, it also functions as an online reference for graduate students, investigators, and professionals, as well as a core text and enrichment for high schools and continuing education.

Contents & Contributors

columbia earthscape presents material from top researchers, research institutes, publishers, and educators from around the world—including universities, societies, database compilers, scholarly presses, textbook publishers, government agencies, and news organizations—to provide the highest quality and widest range of information. It brings to the Web important works not otherwise available online, including original and collaborative new-media projects and publications. Students, teachers, and librarians will find a dynamic, inquiry-based educational resource, featuring illustrated lectures, animations, video and image banks, exercises and labs, syllabi, and basic textbook readings. columbia earthscape also gives policy makers and professionals a robust, carefully selected and assessed collection of environmental legislation, regional studies, international environmental documents, and white papers. And it offers scientists an educational venue in which to incorporate their research as well as a growing archive of journal articles, journal abstracts, conference literature, full-text monographs and selected chapters, and online data sets. Browse any of our four quadrants— Teaching, Learning, Research, and Policy— to find specific material to meets your needs or view a comprehensive index of the entire contents.

Awards, Grants & Reviews

columbia earthscape was conceived and developed through a collaboration of Columbia University Press, Columbia University Information Technology (CUIT), the Columbia University Library system, and a board of distinguished scholars and researchers. It is supported through a cost-recovery subscription license to institutions and individuals.

It was also supported, in part, by the National Science Foundation under grant ILI 9979967. Opinions expressed are those of the authors and not necessarily those of the Foundation. The project also received support from the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resource Coalition SPARC.

columbia earthscape has been cited in the Scout Report for top Web sites in the sciences and has been featured as the month's lead news item of the Association of Research Libraries. The Association of American Publishers has awarded it "Best New Internet Based Electronic Project." Writing in Choice (2000 sup), D. J. Campagna of the College of William and Mary called it "an excellent value for its information content" and "recommended for university libraries, undergraduates through faculty":

Though many Internet sites address environmental issues, few measure up to the university-level emphasis of columbia earthscape.
