The Clarke Center at Dickinson College

The Clarke Center at Dickinson College, established in 1994, has sponsored over 300 lectures, panels, debates, conferences and performances on topics ranging from the death penalty to life on Mars to the relationship between testosterone and war. Members of the community have benefited from the insights of such opinion leaders as Oscar Arias, William Rehnquist, Gennady Zyuganov and Sister Helen Prejean. The Center has also hosted public events in New York and Washington. One of the most striking characteristics of contemporary society is its complexity. Critical problems, such as providing health care, protecting the environment, combating crime, or developing effective international peacekeeping, do not allow for simple solutions. As a result, the Clarke Center encourages the interdisciplinary study of contemporary issues. Consequently, the Center is sponsored by six interdisciplinary programs at Dickinson College: American Studies, Environmental Studies, International Business & Management, International Studies, Policy Studies and Women's Studies.
